A quick release (QR) is the mechanism that connects a steering wheel to the shaft of a Direct Drive base, allowing fast tool-free swapping. Choosing the right quick release is critical — each DD base uses its own standard, and using an incompatible QR can lead to poor performance or damage. Which quick release should you choose for your Direct Drive base?

Selecting a quick release is straightforward once you know your base brand and model — each base requires its own standard. Here's a quick reference guide:

Using a Simucube 2 or 3 base? → SQR Simucube
Using a Simagic Alpha, Alpha EVO or Alpha U? → Simagic QR50/QR70, or the QR-A USB if you want to pass USB data through the QR
Using a MOZA R5, R9, R12 or other R-series base? → MOZA Quick Release
Using a Fanatec base? → QR1 (older bases) or QR2 / QR2 PRO (newer ClubSport and Podium bases)
Using an Asetek base? → Asetek QR with direct integration

What is the difference between Simagic QR50/QR70 and QR-A USB?

Both models are genuine Simagic quick releases compatible with the same bases. The key difference is that the QR-A USB has a built-in USB channel that passes the button signals from the steering wheel through the QR connector itself — no separate spiral coil cable required. This makes it the ideal solution for Simagic GT Pro Hub and Neo X steering wheels, which have a native USB connection built in.

What does the SRM Tiny Emulator do?

The SRM Tiny Emulator solves the compatibility problem between third-party steering wheels and Fanatec bases. Fanatec bases require a specific communication protocol from the steering wheel — without an original Fanatec wheel, the base may display errors or refuse to operate. The emulator mimics the original wheel's communication, allowing DIY or third-party steering wheels to be used while keeping the base fully functional.

Do I need a wheel spacer?

A wheel spacer is useful when a steering wheel mounted directly to the QR sits too close to the base motor housing (a common issue in certain rig configurations), or when you want to adjust the wheel's depth relative to your display. It's a simple mechanical extension that increases the distance between the base shaft and the steering wheel.
