Simagic GT1-D Alcantara – 325 mm D-Shaped Sim Racing Wheel
Simagic GT1-D Alcantara is a complete steering wheel aimed mainly at GT cars, touring cars, prototypes and endurance racing. Its 325 mm D-shaped rim gives the driver a little more space around the knees, which can be useful in compact rigs or cockpits with a low seating position.
The grip areas are covered in Alcantara, providing a textured surface that feels secure during quick corrections and heavier Force Feedback. Beneath the rim, the rigid aluminium and carbon-fibre hub keeps the wheel stable when used with a Direct Drive base.
The control layout remains deliberately straightforward. Four buttons, two rotary encoders and Hall-sensor shift paddles cover the functions most drivers use regularly, without turning the front panel into a crowded collection of similar controls.

Why a D-Shaped Rim Suits GT Racing
Additional room inside the cockpit
The lower part of the wheel is flattened instead of forming a complete circle. This creates extra clearance above the driver’s legs and can make it easier to enter or leave a narrow sim racing cockpit.
The difference is especially noticeable when the seat is mounted low, the pedals are positioned high or the wheelbase sits close to the driver. In these setups, even a small amount of additional space can improve comfort.
A D-shaped rim works best in cars where both hands remain close to the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. GT3, TCR, prototype and endurance cars usually require less steering rotation than rally or drift vehicles, so the wheel does not need to spin freely through the hands.
A balanced 325 mm diameter
The 325 mm size provides more natural leverage than a compact Formula-style wheel. Strong Force Feedback is easier to manage, while the steering still reacts quickly enough for tight chicanes and rapid direction changes.
Small corrections also feel slightly calmer than they would on a much smaller rim. This can be helpful in fast corners, where unnecessary steering movement may disturb the balance of the car.
The wider grip position may also feel more comfortable during longer sessions, particularly for drivers who find narrow Formula wheels too restrictive.
Alcantara Grip Surface
Alcantara gives the grip areas a soft but clearly textured finish. The additional friction helps the hands remain in position when the wheelbase produces a strong impact or the driver makes a sudden correction.
The material works particularly well with clean racing gloves, although gloves are not essential. When driving with bare hands, it is worth keeping them clean and dry to reduce the amount of moisture and skin oils transferred to the surface.
Alcantara benefits from regular, gentle care. Dust can be removed with a clean microfibre cloth or a soft brush. Strong household cleaners and excessive water should be avoided.
Cleaning the grips from time to time helps prevent the fibres from becoming compressed around the areas used most often.
Rigid Aluminium and Carbon-Fibre Construction
The integrated GT1 hub combines CNC-machined aluminium with carbon-fibre components. The structure keeps the rim, controls, paddles and Quick Release working as one solid assembly.
This matters when the wheel is connected to a Direct Drive base. Kerb strikes, sudden oversteer and fast steering corrections can produce significant loads, and unwanted movement in the hub would soften the information reaching the driver.
The GT1-D feels substantial rather than extremely light. Its construction gives the steering a settled character that suits GT cars, touring cars and endurance machinery.
A Simple Control Layout
The GT1-D does not try to fill every available space with buttons. Instead, it provides a small number of clearly positioned controls that are easy to remember after a few sessions.
This makes the wheel particularly practical in traffic or during braking, when looking down for the correct button can become distracting.
Four programmable buttons
The four front buttons can be assigned to functions such as the pit limiter, radio, headlights, wipers, camera controls or vehicle reset.
A typical GT profile might use one button for communication, another for the pit limiter and the remaining two for lights or menu confirmation. The assignments can be changed for each simulator.
Two rotary encoders
The two rotary encoders are useful for settings adjusted in stages. Common examples include brake balance, ABS, traction control, engine maps and audio volume.
The controls are large enough to identify by touch, so the driver can make an adjustment without taking their attention away from the track for long.
In cars with fewer adjustable systems, the encoders can be reassigned to dashboard pages, menu navigation or other supported functions.
Hall-Sensor Paddle Shifters
The rear paddle shifters use contactless Hall sensors. Instead of relying on a conventional electrical switch, the movement is detected magnetically.
This provides a clear and repeatable activation point while limiting wear on the component responsible for registering each shift.
The paddles sit close to the grip areas, allowing the driver to change gear without moving either hand away from the normal steering position.
Optional clutch paddles
The wheel can also be expanded with additional clutch paddles. They are useful for standing starts in cars where the clutch is controlled directly from the steering wheel.
A hand-operated clutch may also make pit-lane exits and low-speed manoeuvres easier in vehicles using a sequential transmission.
The clutch paddles are optional, so the equipment included with the selected version should be checked before purchase.
Simagic Quick Release 50 mm
Simagic GT1-D Alcantara uses the Simagic Quick Release 50 mm system. The wheel can be installed or removed without undoing mounting screws every time.
This makes changing between different steering wheels much quicker. A GT wheel can be replaced by a Formula or round rally rim without using tools during a normal wheel change.
Once correctly engaged, the Quick Release provides a stable mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheelbase.
Compatibility with Simagic Wheelbases
The GT1-D Alcantara works with Simagic Alpha and Alpha EVO Direct Drive wheelbases, including:
- Simagic Alpha Mini
- Simagic Alpha
- Simagic Alpha U
- Simagic Alpha EVO Sport
- Simagic Alpha EVO
- Simagic Alpha EVO Pro
- Simagic Alpha EVO Ultra
Button, encoder and paddle data is sent through the Simagic wireless system, so a USB cable does not need to remain connected to the rotating wheel during normal driving.
Before the first session, it is worth updating SimPro Manager together with the wheel and wheelbase firmware. Some Alpha EVO configurations may also require the communication mode intended for earlier Simagic steering wheels.
Compatibility with Third-Party Wheelbases
Mechanical installation on a wheelbase from another manufacturer may be possible, but the exact requirements depend on the mounting system used by the base.
A separate wheel-side Quick Release, a compatible 50 mm or 70 mm adapter, a spacer or additional mounting hardware may be needed. The selected parts must match both the wheelbase connection and the bolt pattern used by the steering wheel.
The electronic controls were designed mainly around Simagic wireless communication. Mounting the wheel mechanically on another base does not automatically make the buttons, encoders and paddle shifters operational.
Some mixed-brand setups may need an additional communication method. In other configurations, only the steering connection may work, while the electronic controls remain unavailable.
Compatibility should therefore be checked against the exact wheelbase model, Quick Release, adapter and communication method before ordering additional parts.
Recommended Simagic Pedals
The most suitable pedal set depends on the required brake feel, adjustment range and available budget. The GT1-D Alcantara can be paired with any of the main Simagic pedal systems.
- Simagic P500 – an accessible Load Cell set for drivers moving beyond entry-level pedals
- Simagic P700 – an adjustable Load Cell system with room for further upgrades
- Simagic P1000 – a modular pedal platform compatible with hydraulic and haptic accessories
- Simagic P2000 – hydraulic pedals intended for more advanced sim racing cockpits
Recommended Shifters and Handbrake
The wheel already includes paddle shifters, although a separate gearbox can make touring cars, classic GT cars and road vehicles feel more natural.
- Simagic DS-8X – a 2-in-1 shifter with an 8+R H-pattern and sequential mode
- Simagic Q1 – a sequential shifter with adjustable resistance, programmable buttons and a gear display
- Simagic Q1S – a compact sequential shifter with a clear mechanical shift action
- Simagic TB-RS – a hydraulic handbrake suited to rallying, rallycross and drifting
Who Is the Simagic GT1-D Alcantara For?
This model is best suited to drivers who spend most of their time in GT cars, TCR machinery, prototypes and endurance racers. The flat lower section provides useful leg clearance, while the 325 mm diameter feels more natural than a narrow Formula-style wheel.
It should also appeal to users who prefer a simple control layout. Four buttons and two rotary encoders cover the most common adjustments without making the hub difficult to learn.
The Alcantara surface provides a clear, tactile grip and works particularly well during longer sessions. It does, however, benefit from regular cleaning, especially when the wheel is frequently used without gloves.
