Simagic GT1-D Leather – a 330 mm D-shaped wheel for GT and endurance racing

Simagic GT1-D Leather is a complete sim racing steering wheel built around a 330 mm rim with a flattened lower section. Its size and shape are well suited to GT cars, touring cars, prototypes and endurance machinery.

This is not a small Formula wheel that places both hands close together. The wider rim offers more natural leverage and a more relaxed hand position, which can make a noticeable difference during long stints.

The leather version is also practical for a cockpit used regularly. The perforated surface feels comfortable with or without gloves and requires less maintenance than a suede-style finish.

A 330 mm D-shaped rim

The flattened lower section creates more space between the wheel and the driver’s legs. This is particularly useful in compact cockpits where the seat sits low and the wheelbase is mounted close to the knees.

Entering and leaving the rig is easier because the lower part of the wheel does not extend as far as a fully round rim. Once driving, the shape feels natural as long as the car uses the smaller steering range normally associated with GT racing.

A D-shaped rim works best when the hands remain near the three and nine o’clock positions. GT3 cars, TCR machinery and prototypes rarely require the repeated hand-over-hand movement found in rallying or drifting.

More leverage than a compact Formula wheel

The 330 mm diameter provides greater leverage than a 280 or 300 mm steering wheel. Torque from the wheelbase is spread across a wider rim, which can make a powerful Direct Drive system easier to manage during long sessions.

Small hand movements also produce a slightly calmer response. This can help the driver hold a steady line through high-speed corners without making unnecessary corrections.

The wheel remains responsive enough for chicanes and quick changes of direction. Its size sits between a compact Formula rim and the much larger steering wheels found in road cars or trucks.

Perforated leather finish

The rim is wrapped in perforated leather. Small openings in the surface help reduce moisture build-up around the grip during longer races.

Leather feels smoother than Alcantara, but the shaped rim keeps the hands settled without requiring an excessively tight grip. This can reduce fatigue when the car produces frequent impacts through kerbs or uneven surfaces.

The material is straightforward to maintain. After driving, it can be wiped gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Aggressive cleaners and excessive water should be avoided.

Comfortable with or without gloves

The leather finish does not require racing gloves, making it convenient for shorter sessions or a cockpit used several times throughout the week.

Gloves may still be useful during endurance races. They reduce direct contact with perspiration and limit friction in areas where the hands remain fixed for many laps.

Rigid aluminium and carbon-fibre construction

The GT1 hub combines CNC-machined aluminium with carbon-fibre components. It is built to handle the repeated loads created by a Direct Drive wheelbase without unwanted movement across the control panel.

Rigidity is important during kerb strikes, sudden loss of grip and fast direction changes. When the hub remains stable, the forces produced by the motor travel directly into the rim and the driver’s hands.

The complete wheel weighs approximately 1.95 kg. It is heavier than modern composite wheels, but the metal hub and larger rim produce a solid, settled character.

How the weight affects force feedback

A heavier wheel carries more rotational inertia. It may smooth some of the quickest impulses, but it can also make steering feel less nervous and easier to control.

A strong Alpha or Alpha EVO wheelbase has enough torque to manage the GT1-D comfortably. On lower force settings, a small adjustment may help preserve finer feedback details.

Integrated GT1 control hub

The GT1 front panel does not attempt to fill every available space with controls. It focuses on the inputs commonly used during ordinary racing.

The layout is symmetrical and the buttons sit close to the rim. Once their positions become familiar, most functions can be operated without taking the eyes away from the circuit.

A simpler panel also reduces the chance of pressing the wrong control when driving over bumps or making a quick steering correction.

Four programmable buttons

Four front buttons can be assigned to frequently used controls such as the pit limiter, radio, camera view, headlights, wipers or vehicle reset.

The buttons are illuminated and allow the lighting behaviour to be adjusted. This makes the controls easier to recognise in a darker room.

In a GT car, two buttons may handle communication and the pit limiter, while the remaining pair controls lights and message confirmation. The same layout can be remapped for another simulator.

Two rotary encoders

Two large rotary encoders sit in the lower part of the hub. They are suited to settings that change gradually or in defined steps.

Possible assignments include brake balance, traction control, ABS, engine maps, audio volume and other car-specific adjustments.

The raised shape makes the encoders easy to find by touch, allowing the driver to alter a setting without looking down at the wheel for long.

Two three-position toggle switches

A toggle switch is placed on each side of the hub. Both can be moved upwards or downwards and returned to a central position.

This arrangement works well for paired commands. One switch can move through menu pages, while the other increases or decreases a selected value.

The toggles are also used during paddle calibration and selected wheel-configuration procedures before being assigned to simulator controls.

Hall-sensor shift paddles

Two shift paddles are installed behind the rim. Hall sensors register their movement magnetically rather than relying on a conventional mechanical contact for each input.

This provides a repeatable activation point and reduces wear on the sensing component. The action remains consistent during relaxed upshifts and rapid downshifts before a corner.

The left paddle is normally assigned to downshifts and the right paddle to upshifts, although the inputs can be remapped where the simulator permits it.

Optional clutch paddles

The GT1-D can be expanded with additional clutch paddles. They are useful for standing starts in cars that use a sequential gearbox but still require precise clutch control.

The bite point can be calibrated to suit the driver’s preferred launch technique. This makes it easier to release the clutch progressively rather than applying the full input immediately.

Clutch paddles are optional. The standard wheel already includes the two main shift paddles, so the upgrade is only necessary when hand-controlled clutch operation is required.

Simagic QR50 Quick Release included

The wheel is supplied with a Simagic QR50 Quick Release. The wheel-side connector is already part of the package, so an additional Quick Release is not required for installation on a compatible Simagic wheelbase.

The mechanism allows the wheel to be removed without undoing mounting screws. A Formula or rally wheel can be fitted for another session, with the GT1-D returning when a larger GT rim is preferred.

Once engaged correctly, the connection remains rigid and does not require tools for routine wheel changes.

Wireless wheelbase communication

Button, encoder, toggle and paddle inputs are transmitted to a compatible wheelbase through the Simagic wireless system.

No USB cable needs to run from the rotating steering wheel to the computer during normal use. This keeps the area around the wheel clear and avoids cable movement during quick steering inputs.

Wireless-channel setup and input calibration should be completed according to the procedure used by the connected wheelbase and steering wheel.

Compatibility with Simagic wheelbases

Simagic GT1-D Leather works with Simagic Direct Drive wheelbases from the Alpha and Alpha EVO ranges:

Full operation of the buttons, switches and paddles is designed primarily around the Simagic ecosystem. Mechanical installation on a third-party wheelbase may be possible with additional adapters, but this does not automatically provide electronic control support.

Configuration through SimPro Manager

SimPro Manager can be used to check button, encoder, toggle and paddle operation. It also handles calibration and other settings for compatible Simagic hardware.

Checking wheel and wheelbase firmware before the first session is recommended. Current software helps avoid input-detection and wireless-communication problems.

Separate simulator profiles are useful when moving between different car classes. A GT3 layout may use the controls differently from a TCR car or prototype.

Where the Simagic GT1-D Leather fits best

The wheel feels most natural in GT cars, touring cars, prototypes and endurance racing. The hands remain in a stable position, while the flat lower section creates more room inside the cockpit.

It can also be used in road cars and selected classics that do not require frequent hand-over-hand steering. A fully round rim will normally be more suitable for rallying or drifting.

The 330 mm diameter is particularly useful for drivers who find compact Formula wheels too narrow. The wider hand position can feel more relaxed over a long race.

GT1-D Leather compared with the other GT1 versions

GT1-D Leather and GT1-D Alcantara

Simagic GT1-D Alcantara uses the same basic shape, structure and control layout. The grip material is the main difference.

Leather is easier to maintain and works well without gloves. Alcantara provides a softer, higher-friction surface but requires more regular care.

GT1-D Leather and GT1-SR Leather

Simagic GT1-SR Leather uses a fully round rim. It is better suited to rallying, drifting, road cars and classics where the wheel regularly moves through the hands.

The GT1-D creates more clearance above the legs and is better matched to circuit cars that use a smaller steering range.

Simagic GT1-D Leather in regular use

Simagic GT1-D Leather combines a wide D-shaped rim with a clear and uncomplicated control panel. Four buttons, two encoders and two toggle switches cover the most useful racing functions without creating a layout that is difficult to remember.

The metal construction feels reassuringly solid, the leather rim suits frequent use and the Hall-sensor paddles provide consistent gear changes. The included QR50 and wireless communication complete a steering wheel designed for Simagic Alpha and Alpha EVO wheelbases.
