VNM Direct Drive Premier - Front-axle information without random jolts

A Direct Drive motor turns the shaft without belts or gears between the drive and steering wheel. VNM Direct Drive Premier can therefore change force direction promptly. On track, the useful result is recognising whether the front tyres still follow the chosen line or have begun to push towards the outside of the corner.

Its 13 Nm output leaves room for a hard kerb strike or sudden wheel return without requiring heavy steering throughout the lap. A good profile should separate smooth asphalt, kerb edges, steering unload and the moment grip returns. Strength without those distinctions provides little help when working on consistency.

Five motor pole pairs and precise position tracking

The brushless motor uses five pole pairs, while a 23-bit encoder tracks shaft position at very fine resolution. A small correction before the apex is not lost between coarse readings, and wheel return can be tuned to feel progressive rather than stepping through obvious positions.

Wheel diameter and mass still shape the final response. A light rim changes direction quickly in rally or a single-seater. A larger wheel settles movement and suits road cars. VNM Direct Drive Premier provides the same accurate foundation for both, with the active FFB profile creating the necessary difference in behaviour.

Telemetry Force Feedback and game setup

Experimental Telemetry Force Feedback uses information supplied by the game. VNM lists iRacing, Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, rFactor 2 and Le Mans Ultimate. It does not remove the need for setup: strength, damping and in-game values still have to be matched to the car.

Separate profiles are worth preparing for different disciplines. A GT car benefits from a settled centre and clear load build-up. Rally needs quicker wheel return, while a prototype may call for greater weight at speed. Because telemetry support remains under development, its available functions may change with later software versions.

A compact base for a monitor placed close to the wheel

Without the Quick Release, the case measures 130 × 130 × 228 mm. It supports front, side and bottom mounting. The short body makes it easier to place a monitor close behind the shaft, although the deck must still support an 11.6 kg base and the forces produced during a rapid countersteer.

The box contains a 300 W power supply, USB A-B and USB A-C cables, standard EMC stop button, base-side Quick Release, four M8 bolts and hex keys. The steering wheel and its matching wheel-side Quick Release are purchased separately.

A multipurpose cockpit can use the VNM Apex-R. The optional VNM Slipring removes the cable rotating around the shaft.

1. What is the VNM Direct Drive Premier?

It is a Direct Drive wheelbase for PC sim racing. The motor supplies up to 13 Nm without a belt or gear transmission between the motor and shaft.

2. Who is the Premier model intended for?

It is designed for a first serious Direct Drive cockpit. Strength can be adjusted around the car, session length and steering wheel fitted to the base.

3. Do I need to use the full 13 Nm?

No. Maximum torque is available as reserve. A regular profile should retain FFB detail, remain comfortable and stay within the limits of the cockpit and driver.

4. What encoder does the wheelbase use?

A 23-bit encoder measures shaft position. Its fine resolution supports smooth tracking of small steering movements and rapid corrections.

5. What is Telemetry Force Feedback?
