Building a custom sim racing steering wheel is a popular choice among advanced sim racers who want hardware perfectly tailored to their needs — in terms of button layout, materials and compatibility with a specific Direct Drive base. Where to start with a DIY steering wheel build

Every DIY steering wheel requires a few key components. Here's what you need at each stage of the build:

USB controller – the brain of the wheel, registering signals from every button and encoder. The most popular choices are the Simline X36 Ultimate (36 inputs), the BU0836A 12-bit (the proven DIY community standard), and the DSD BLU32 BLE with Bluetooth wireless communication.
Rotary encoders – for engine maps, brake bias or DRS. Recommended options: ELMA E33 (professional-grade quality), Bourns PEC11H and CTS 288T.
Funky Switch – a multi-function 5-axis switch (4 directions + push), an essential component of any modern racing wheel. Available versions: ALPS RKJXT1F42001 and the complete 7-in-1 Multiswitch kit with aluminium knob.

Is DIY the right choice for me?

Building a custom steering wheel from DIY parts gives you complete control over the final product — you can create a GT, rally, F1-style or even flight sim wheel with exactly the control layout you need.
