FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Heusinkveld Sim Handbrake use a load cell instead of a potentiometer?
A load cell measures the actual force applied to the lever rather than its angular position. This means the handbrake input is proportional to how hard you pull — not how far — exactly as in a real racing car. The result is far more precise and natural control during rally and drift scenarios.
What is the dual-stage spring system and how do I adjust it?
The dual-stage system consists of an initial coil spring that simulates handbrake cable slack and brake pad clearance, followed by the main resistance generated by elastomer compression. The coil spring's travel and preload are both adjustable. You can also remove the initial coil spring entirely if you prefer a direct feel from the very first millimetre of lever travel.
What do the three elastomers included with the handbrake do?
The three elastomers (soft, medium, hard) are a patented Heusinkveld solution and provide the main source of lever resistance. They simulate progressive brake feel — the harder you pull, the greater the resistance. Swapping elastomers takes just a few seconds and completely changes the character of the handbrake without any tools required.
How do I mount the Heusinkveld Sim Handbrake to my cockpit?
The kit includes T-bolts and T-nuts that allow mounting to most aluminium profile cockpits via the adapter plate. The adapter plate also enables tilting the handbrake base up to 22.5 degrees to achieve the most ergonomic lever position. The lever itself can be set horizontally or vertically with ±26 degrees of fine-tuning in each orientation.
Does the Heusinkveld Sim Handbrake require setup before use?
No — the handbrake is factory pre-calibrated and works plug & play straight out of the box. If you want to adjust non-linear output curves, dead zone or recalibrate the force settings, you can do so in the Heusinkveld SmartControl application. SmartControl requires Windows 10 and is only needed when you wish to make custom adjustments.
What does Heusinkveld SmartControl software do?
SmartControl is Heusinkveld's configuration software that allows precise mapping of non-linear output curves, dead zone adjustment and maximum force calibration — giving you full control over how the handbrake responds at every stage of lever travel. All changes take effect in real time and are immediately visible during a session.
Does the Heusinkveld Sim Handbrake work with PlayStation or Xbox?
No. The Heusinkveld Sim Handbrake is compatible with PC (Windows 10) only. It does not support PlayStation or Xbox consoles. The device is designed exclusively for PC-based sim racing environments.
