The Fanatec CSL DD QR2 is a compact Direct Drive wheel base offered on one product page in 5 Nm and 8 Nm variants. Both versions use the same direct-drive system, FullForce technology, contactless Hall sensor, passively cooled aluminium housing and preinstalled QR2 Lite Base-Side (Type-C). The 5 Nm variant is supplied with a 90 W power supply, while the 8 Nm variant includes the 180 W Boost Kit 180.

Direct Drive and FullForce without belts or gears

The motor connects directly to the steering axis, so no belt or gear drive sits between the motor and the steering wheel. This design transfers force-feedback reactions without intermediate drive components. Patented FluxBarrier technology supports motor efficiency and smoothness, while a contactless Hall sensor monitors axis position.

FullForce uses a protocol developed for Fanatec Direct Drive bases and fine motor-frequency control to reproduce detailed effects with very low latency. The feature requires firmware V1.5.1.2 or later and implementation by the game; its presence in the wheel base does not mean that every title supports it automatically.

One wheel-base design with two torque levels

The 5 Nm variant uses the standard 90 W power supply and produces 5 Nm of peak torque. The 8 Nm variant includes the 180 W Boost Kit 180, unlocking the motor's full performance and higher output. In the linear FFS setting, Fanatec specifies up to 4 Nm and 6 Nm respectively, while the 5 Nm and 8 Nm figures apply to the peak setting.

The 5 Nm version can be upgraded later with an original Boost Kit 180 without replacing the wheel base. For safety, Fanatec permits only the standard 90 W supply or Boost Kit 180; using another power supply can be dangerous and voids the wheel-base warranty.

QR2 Lite Base-Side with steering-wheel hot-swap

The preinstalled QR2 Lite Base-Side (Type-C) uses a tapered coupling derived from the solution developed for the BMW M4 GT3 race car. A steering wheel is attached by pressing its QR2 adapter onto the base-side coupling, while removal is performed by pulling the wheel-side sleeve and the wheel away from the base.

The base-side component is made from carbon fibre-reinforced polyamide and supports QR2 Lite Wheel-Side, QR2 Wheel-Side and QR2 Pro Wheel-Side. Fanatec confirms that it does not restrict torque in the 8 Nm configuration. Compatible steering wheels can be exchanged without restarting the wheel base or simulator.

Aluminium housing, passive cooling and rig expansion

The extruded and CNC-machined aluminium housing acts as both a rigid chassis and a heat sink. The wheel base operates without a fan, although sufficient space should be left around it for passive airflow. T-nut rails on the sides and bottom support bottom or side mounting to a sim-racing rig.

The rear panel provides connections for power, USB-C, pedals, handbrake, two shifters and Fanatec DataPort-C. The front threaded inserts are intended for Fanatec accessories rather than front-mounting the complete wheel base to a cockpit. PC or Xbox operation requires a compatible steering wheel, with Xbox compatibility supplied by an Xbox-licensed wheel.

1. What is the difference between the 5 Nm and 8 Nm variants?

The wheel-base construction and features are the same. The variants differ in power supply, SKU and available torque: the 5 Nm version has a 90 W supply, while the 8 Nm version includes the 180 W Boost Kit 180.

2. Can the 5 Nm variant be upgraded to 8 Nm later?

Yes. The original Boost Kit 180, sold separately, unlocks 8 Nm operation. Only the standard 90 W supply or the Fanatec Boost Kit 180 intended for this base should be used.

3. Is a steering wheel included?

No. Both variants include the wheel base with QR2 Lite Base-Side, the appropriate power supply, USB cable, T-nuts and Quick Guide. A compatible Fanatec steering wheel with a suitable QR2 Wheel-Side must be selected separately.

4. Does the QR2 Lite Base-Side restrict torque in the 8 Nm version?

No. Fanatec confirms that the preinstalled QR2 Lite Base-Side (Type-C) works with QR2 Lite, QR2 and QR2 Pro wheel-side versions without a torque restriction, including with Boost Kit 180.

5. Does the wheel base work on PC?

Yes, when combined with a compatible Fanatec steering wheel. Individual features, including FullForce, depend on game support and current firmware.

6. Does the wheel base work on Xbox?

Yes, when used with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec steering wheel. The wheel provides Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S compatibility, and the game must also support the hardware.

7. Can the CSL DD be used with PlayStation?

No. Both CSL DD variants are incompatible with PlayStation consoles and cannot be upgraded to add PlayStation support.

8. Can the wheel base be mounted to a table?

Yes, with a compatible Fanatec clamp sold separately. Fanatec specifies support for table thicknesses from 5 to 60 mm.

9. Does the wheel base use active cooling?

No. The aluminium housing acts as both a structural component and a passive heat sink, so the wheel base does not use a fan.

10. What does FullForce require?

The wheel base must be updated to firmware V1.5.1.2 or later using the current Fanatec App. FullForce effects must also be supported by the game.
